我在《也谈翻译》一文中征求 “韬光养晦”切中原意之英译。5月20日《文汇报·笔会》刊出此文后，收到一些读者来信，提出几则颇有创意的英译。叶必远先生“有兴而来”，提出：“Hidethe tal ent,spearhead and act.”我的挚友倪光炯先生提出：“Hide one’s ambition while tempering capabiities.”一位隐名读者提出：“Keep low-profile and reserve actions.”李东生先生提出：“Shadow hel ps concentrati on.”此英译只有三个字，词简意赅，出乎意料之外。这些英译较之《汉英词典》之“Hideone’scapabi l i ti es and bi de one’stime.”均有所改进，但就切中“韬光养晦”原意而言，我觉得尚有商榷改进余地。

“Hide one’scapabiliies and bide one’s time.”可直译为:保持低姿态以等待时机。“韬光养晦”确有保持低姿态的含义，问题在于等待时机是消极的，而我认为，“韬光养晦”是积极的策略。切中原意的英译，必须表达出“韬光养晦”之积极涵义。
