This story took place in America many years ago. A young man was called up for army service, but he didn’t want to become a soldier. When he went for his medical exam, he pretended that his eyesight was very bad. The doctor pointed to the eye chart on the wall and said, “ Please read the top line.” “The top line of what?” the young man asked. “The top line of the chart,” the doctor answered. “What chart?” the young man asked. “ The one on the wall,” the doctor said. “What wall?” the young man asked again. Finally the doctor decided that the man’s eyes were not good enough for army service.
That evening the same young man was at a movie when another man came in and sat next to him in the dark. When the lights went on, the young man saw that his neighbor was the doctor who had examined him earlier. At once, he said, “Excuse me, madam, but does this bus go to Main Street?”

An old English saying says, “Laughter is the best medicine.” One person who certainly would have agreed with this is Norman Cousins.
Norman Cousins was the editor of a magazine called Saturday Review for almost forty years. He also wrote and spoke about world peace and anti-nuclear (反核武器) and anti-war (反战) issues, traveling to many different countries to share his ideas.
In the 1960s, after returning to the United States from a busy and tiring trip to Europe, Mr. Cousins got sick. He discovered he had a rare disease, known as ankylosing spondylitis, that caused the joints (关节) between his bones to become stiff.
In less than a week after he got back, he could not stand. Every move that he made was painful. He was not able to sleep at night. The doctors told Mr. Cousins that they did not know how to cure his problem and he might never get over the illness. Mr. Cousins, however, refused to give up hope.
Mr. Cousins thought that the illness could be caused by unhappy thoughts. He did not want to take medicine to cure himself. Instead, he felt that happy thoughts or laughter might cure (治愈) his illness.
He began to experiment on himself while still in the hospital by watching comedy shows on television. Mr. Cousins quickly found that ten minutes of real laughter during the day gave him two hours of pain-free (无痛苦的) sleep at night.
Deciding that the doctors could not help him, Mr. Cousins left the hospital and checked into a hotel room where he could continue his experiments with laughter. For eight days, Mr. Cousins rested in the hotel room watching comedy shows on television, reading amusing books, and sleeping whenever he felt tired. Within three weeks, he felt well enough to take a vacation to Puerto Rico where he began running on the beach for exercise.
After a few months, Mr. Cousins was able to carry on his work. He had laughed himself back to health.

More than two thousand years ago, in 360 BC, the Greek writer, Plato, described a beautiful city. He said that it was lost somewhere under the ocean. He called this city Atlantis. This was the start of the legend (传说) of Atlantis.
Plato said the people of Atlantis had been rich and happy. There were amazing palaces and ports in the city. The houses had fountains with hot and cold water, and the walls were covered with silver and gold. Outside the city, farmers grew food for all the people. It was sad to think that no one would go there again.
For two thousand years, everybody thought that Atlantis was just a fantastic story. They thought that Plato had invented it. But then in 1882 an American called Ignatius Donnelly wrote a book about Atlantis. He believed that there really was a beautiful lost city under the ocean. Thousands of people read his book and wanted to find the lost city.
A lot of people believed that Atlantis was on an island in Greece called Santorini. Santorini used to be much bigger than it was today. About 3,500 years ago, a huge volcano (火山) erupted and most of the island sank under the ocean. Some people say it was in Spain, Asia or even in England. People have been looking for the lost city for more than a hundred years, but nobody has ever found it.
